Who is the Artist?
Annajane (she/they) is an eccentric host inviting participants into a flowing interpretation of her personal perspective on life, nature, otherness, and the ephemeral ties connecting all of humanity. She creates installations, including puppets and tactile art pieces, tempting viewers to collaborate with the divinity of connection. Caused by a constantly shifting childhood, Annajane developed a vivid inner world in solitude as she wandered the woods beyond the beige suburban sprawl. As an adult, their work as an artist creates a portal between her inner world and reality through the power of storytelling and make-believe.
She is inspired by folklore and folk art, 20th century surrealism, kitsch and camp, puppetry for film and stage, and stop-motion animation. Their work bids viewers to go deep, asking themselves conceptual questions both mundane and mystical. Color, symbolism, characters, and environments provide soft soil from which these queries may be unearthed.
Committed to the past, present, and future of humankind, and our relationship to the Earth, most of her materials are found or recycled. Objects are used to retell stories of human life, the communities we have formed, and our constant rebirth back into ourselves.
In response to knowing that we all must find our individual identity as we find our place inside the whole, Annajane’s work whispers to the inner children of reality-worn adults, “Remember who you are.”. It is a calling-in of the entire community.
