Resistance Disco was a queer informed art happening created to allow community members to express themselves through art as a means for resistance and survival. Alongside Ray Lipinski, (Artist and Clay on Main Communicatons Manager) I developed a schedule for the day's event.
I hosted, with my puppet, DreamWeaver, inviting participants through an imaginary "portal" of truth, recognizing the value of being here, now, during a historic time and the importance of documenting ourselves in the current moment. We began with a poem, titled WE ARE HERE, commemorating the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in 1969.
I led participants in making fabric self-portraits with scraps of fabric. Then, participants were invited to safely, without judgement, share their portraits and present their truth (a sentence, poem, word, song, etc.).
After everyone shared, we fixed the portraits to a tapestry. Finally, participants used markers to draw and write around the portraits, forming a cohesive finished art piece, documenting the moment under a title WE ARE HERE. DreamWeaver and I closed out the portal, inviting everyone back into the reality we came from, but with the ability to remember the feeling of unity, respect, freedom, and truth that we created together, and can bring forth into the rest of our lives.
